Did you know that you can do sit ups until you are blue in the face and it won’t do much of anything to help you lose your stomach fat? Most people are mistakenly under the impression that doing sit ups, crunches, or using any of the “ab gadgets” that you see on infommercials will get them the stomach of their dreams.
The truth is, though, that sit ups and crunches alone won’t help you to get a flat stomach. Situps work to build your stomach muscles which seems like it should flatten your stomach. However, if you have body fat, your abdominal muscles will just be hidden beneath it, so even if your stomach muscles are very toned you can still have a poochy tummy.
In order to get a flat stomach you first have to lose your body fat so that you can actually see your abs.
Instead of working only to tone your abdominal muscles, you goal should be to do a workout that builds and boosts your metabolism so that you can burn off your body fat faster. Once your body fat is gone then you can see your shapely, toned abs that have been hidden away under the fat.
Another common misconception is that cardio is the best way to kickstart your metabolism and burn more fat. It’s true that cardio is an important part of any exercise routine and it will help to boost your metabolism. However, to really get the biggest increase in your metabolism (and then burn your body fat faster) you need to also add strength training into your workout routine.
Increasing the amount of muscle that you have in your body and doing cardio along with it kicks your metabolism into high gear and allows you to burn off your body fat quickly. The fast you burn body fat the sooner you’ll be able to see those sexy abs that have been hiding away under your belly fat.
